Traditional Techniques – Mini Course
About the Course
This short course is suitable for beginners and you will be introduced to two traditional jewellery making techniques of piercing and soldering with some basic texturing and colouring processes.
Week 1: Learn how to cut, saw and pierce delicate shapes in to metal to produce a pendant drop.
Week 2: Hard soldering will be explained and demonstrated by making a silver band ring.
Week 3: Using a combination of the two techniques learnt in the previous weeks the students will make a piece of jewellery of their choice. i.e ring, earrings etc
The course is taught by Fiona Cocks BA (Hons) in jewellery and silversmithing, and many years of teaching at Plymouth College of Art, she will guide you through all the techniques needed to create your piece. No previous metal working experience is required. It is also suitable for people who wish to add to there jewellery making journey.
The 3 hour sessions takes place in the workshops of Bigbury Mint, which is in Ermington, near Ivybridge, in the heart of the South Hams area of Devon.
Courses run on Thursdays evenings, one a week for 3 weeks. We can take group-bookings at other times as well, and these can be tailored to your needs.
What’s included in the price?
All tools and materials are provided. A small amount of silver will also be provided for the final project, however if you would like a large piece a small additional charge will be required. Turn up ready for a 6pm start on Thursday evenings with clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, and enclosed shoes and boots suitable for a workshop (not flip-flops or sandals). Parking is available right outside.

If the notice is less than 30 days, then we can only refund 50% of your payment. We retain the right to refuse entry to anyone who is aggressive or under the influence of drugs including alcohol.

We advise that you bring and wear a mask. There will be some sanitising rules that will be explained to you when you arrive.
We can’t offer tea or coffee so we advise you to bring a flask.
