Civil Defence Long Service Medal Pre 1968 EIIR Full Size

Instituted: March 1961.

Branch of Service: Civil Defence and other auxiliary forces.

Ribbon: Blue bearing three narrow stripes of yellow, red and green.

Original Metal: Cupro-nickel.

Size: Height 38mm; max. width 32mm.

Description: (Obverse) the effigy of the reigning monarch; (reverse) three shields flanked by sprigs of acorns and oak leaves. The upper shield is inscribed CD. Initials on the lower shields AFS and NHSR. After 1968 a new reverse was used incorporating the words CIVIL DEFENCE and LONG SERVICE.

Bar for additional 15 year periods worn on the medal ribbon. The bar is represented by a silver rosette when the ribbon only is worn.

Issued unnamed to those who had completed 15 years service in a wide range of Civil Defence organisations. It was extended to C Civil Defence personnel in Gibraltar, Hong Kong and Malta in 1965. The medal became obsolescent in the UK after the Civil Defence Corps and Auxiliary Fire Service were disbanded in 1968, but members of the CD Corps in the Isle of Man and Channel Islands are still eligible.
