Description
The Dartmouth Sovereign is one of a range of ‘Town Coins’ made by Bigbury Mint. They are made as fictitious currency or tokens of Devon Towns, local to where the Mint exists. The coins can be bought to give as gifts, made into jewellery, or used as tokens. If your town (wherever in the world) would like to commission us to make a ‘coin’, please contact us.
The Dartmouth Sovereign.
25mm diameter brass.
The obverse of the medal shows the Dartmouth Arms which are based on a seal reputedly from the time of Richard the Lionheart in the 13th century. The plaster model was carved by David Holland
The anchor on the reverse reminds us of Dartmouth’s seafaring history and is decorated with a star and scallop, emblems taken from the arms of Dartmouth’s twin town of Courseulles. The three English roses over the anchor represent the old three boroughs of Dartmouth, Clifton and Hardness. The plaster model was carved by David Holland.
