RN Long Service And Good Conduct LSGC Medal GVI Miniature

Instituted: 24 August 1831, by Order in Council.

Branch of Service: Royal Navy.

Ribbon: Plain dark blue (1831); dark blue with white edges (1848).

Original Metal: Silver.

Size: 36mm.

Description: (Obverse) the sovereign’s effigy; (reverse) a three-masted man-of-war surrounded by a rope tied at the foot with a reef knot and having the legend FOR LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT round the circumference.

Bar for additional periods of 15 years worn on the medal ribbon. The bar is represented by a silver rosette when the ribbon only is worn.

Originally awarded for 21 years exemplary conduct, but the period was reduced to 10 years in 1874, then later increased to 15 years.
Bars for additional periods of 15 years were instituted by George V. In March 1981 commissioned officers of the naval services became eligible after 15 years service, provided at least 12 years were served in the ranks.
