INFO

Awarded to uniformed volunteers of the Cadet Forces in recognition of long and exemplary service in the Cadet Forces. Service may reckon from September 3, 1926, with service between September 3, 1939 and September 2, 1945 counting two-fold. Until June 30, 1971, officers and non-commissioned officers only were awarded the medal, the qualification for which was 12 years continuous service, with clasps for successive periods of 12 years service. From July 1, 1971, cadet service over the age of 18 years of age could reckon for the medal and the qualifying period for the clasp was reduced to eight years, which need not be continuous. With effect from April 1, 1999, the qualifying period for the clasp was reduced to six years. Awards are now governed by the Royal Warrant dated November 19, 2001 which consolidates amendments to earlier Royal Warrants and extends the qualification and recognition provisions. Under JSP814 (1st edition) 2006, service for the medal did not have to be continuous; but JSP814 (final dated 31 March 2011) now states service to be continuous. Service for the clasp does not need to be continuous.
The maximum cadet service is four years; other reckonable services includes the UK Volunteer Services, OTC, University Royal Naval Units and University Air Squadrons (maximum three years and not counted towards the Volunteer Services Medal or its predecessors), and Regular forces (maximum three years and not counted towards a long service award). When the ribbon alone is worn, the award of each clasp is denoted by a silver rose. To denote service beyond the award of three clasps, the following are to be worn: Four clasps—one gold rose, Five clasps—one gold rose and one silver rose, Six clasps—one gold rose and two silver roses, Seven clasps—two gold roses. Award of the medal and clasp is promulgated in the London Gazette. Issued to those qualifying in New Zealand under the terms of a Royal Warrant dated February 1, 1950 and the New Zealand Cadet Forces Medal Regulations dated January 13, 1954.
